The baby's room

At long last . . . the baby's room! Getting it ready was pretty daunting, mostly because I really don't have a knack for decorating spaces, at least not with a time-limit. And I'm not big on matching colors/objects or buying new stuff. I'm happy with how it turned out, though.  Here are a few notes on what we did and why:

Things to look at  My friend Kat gave me some very good advice when she suggested that we decorate/paint the room with things that we enjoy looking at. So, not feeling very jazzed about staring down a bunch of giraffes or footballs or whatever for the next few years, Soren and I decided to do cheerful (but not too cheerful) colors, big birch tree decals, some homemade curtains and a framed print that we love. And how about the mobiles! The fuzzy felt one is from Regina at everyeskimo and the elephants in the window are from Auntie Ellen in Australia.

A place to sleep  There's no crib! This was a big decision and I am really excited about it. The baby will sleep on a floor bed once he gets to be about six months old (he'll be in a co-sleeper until then). This means that he'll have a crib mattress directly on the floor in his room, just a few inches off the ground. There will be a comfy rug to cushion him when he wiggles off and his room will be totally childproof. Bonus: he'll be able to experience his room at his own level and, eventually, wake and play/explore without needing us to come and get him. It's a Montessori thing, I learned.

A place for things  At first I thought we didn't need a dresser and we bought a changing table. But then I realized that the dresser is a better long-term investment and pretty important for storage purposes (the dude has quite the wardrobe). So for now, we have both. We will remove the changing table and replace it with the floor bed once he moves into his room to sleep.

A place to sit  I sat in many rockers/gliders and read many reviews before buying one from Dutailier. It seems that gliders are either a.) inexpensive, kind of ugly and poorly made or b.) super expensive, beautiful, and well made.  I didn't feel like I could spend $800 on a chair (although I thought about it believe me!) so I did some research and settled on this one. We'll see how it holds up!

I see some babylegs! We are getting a LOT of use out of them now that Owen's legs are a little chunkier. I can't wait to see baby Severen in them!

I agree, the floor bed sounds so intriguing!! I work with a woman who works at a waldorf school and the thought that goes behind those schools is astounding! I wish everyone would teach their children that way! I can't wait to see how it works out for you!

Glad to see someone else breaking the mold a bit. We are staying in our one-bedroom apartment for at least another year. We don't see the point in buying a house if we don't know how long we'll be here. We are in a part of the world where houses are abundant and cheap. Most couples our age in the area have boughten huge old houses. I think the idea of no bedroom for the kid would have more gravity in a big city.

You should see people's face when I explain that there is no nursery to decorate. Poor kid won't even get a dresser of his own. Probably a changing table though as we have to have somewhere to put all the cloth diapers.

We plan to go the co-sleeper route too. I'd love to here about your experience with it.

I do like the idea of the floor bed with area to explore. I'll keep that in mind if we ever have a second room.

Awwwh... Regina's mobile is amazing, this room is just too adorable and I'm going all mushy over the tiny little baby clothes now. Auntie Ellen likes :)

Do you know I didn't even notice the lack of crib when I looked at these photos? Floor mattress is such a good idea!

What a wonderful room for your son to grow-up in! I like the idea of the cubes for the bookshelf, and putting little compartments in the dresser for the clothes -- especially socks! I'm of the same mind that you should decorate your child's room how you would like. They don't know the difference, and you don't have all those tacky decals randomly stuck to the walls :)

I think Sev's room is wonderful!! I think it's important to offer somewhat of a blank slate for little growing beings -- you've created a very warm and comfortable, secure feeling space.

I had to Google "Co-sleeper" -- I hadn't heard of one. Baby items have come a long way in 25+ years!! I hope this means you'll get more sleep! I used to love getting up and going into the baby's room to rock quietly in the dimly lit night. Such private peace. But I was lucky and did not have a job besides Mother during those years so I was able to nap during the daytime if needed.

How sweet of you to share these things with us! Thank you!
